Interkative Netzkunstarbeit

The work Unboxing* refers to an internet phenomenon that has been circulating on the web since the early 2000s. People unbox products in front of a running camera, comment on the process and publish these videos on an online platform. The objects can be anything: the latest smartphone, a toy figure, a firearm or even food. The focus is always on the unboxing process. The company's own unboxing YouTube channels attract millions of visitors, and their reach is constantly growing. Whether the objects are high-priced luxury products or €5 trash doesn't seem to be that important.

The producers of the content profit from the viewing of the videos, as do the companies that manufacture the products, sometimes in a roundabout way. The staging of the unpacking incl. the examination or the ighlighting of the visual, sound or of the visual, sonic or haptic qualities form the ingredients of the ritual, which otherwise often gets by without linguistic explanations.

In our world of the 2020s, the permeability of virtual and real, digital and analog has become very great. The Net and its associated scopes and possibilities are ubiquitous. In the "New Aestehtic" approach introduced by James Bridle, the visibility of digitality and the existence of the Internet in the analog, physical world is addressed. This is also where Unboxing* docks by transferring the phenomenon of "unboxing" into the real world. However, the work Unboxing* is not content with a one-time "putting over" or "stepping over", but sets a cycle in motion. The project work is transferred back to the net and is not only distributed there, but can also be experienced.
